explore Berlin

Mittendrin statt nur Konzert

Classical music doesn’t belong behind thick walls; it belongs on the streets, in the neighbourhoods, right among the people – this has been part of our Stegreif identity ever since we were founded. With our new project ‘explore Berlin’, the ensemble is once again straying from the well-trodden paths of the traditional cultural scene and delving deep into Berlin’s districts. We’re breaking with convention and tapping into urban venues where symphonic music has probably never been experienced quite like this before: without sheet music, without a conductor, without chairs – and in constant motion. Yet “explore Berlin” is far more than just an extraordinary concert series; it’s a living dialogue. In every neighbourhood, we blend radical musical performance with in-depth music education. Each neighbourhood concert is accompanied by a music education programme, which we organise directly on site in collaboration with local partners. Here, professionals and the local community come together to break down the barriers between stage and audience. The grand finale? A joint musical and artistic workshop presentation that brings the pulse of the neighbourhood to life. Berlin, we’re right in the thick of it.

The kick-off: Revolution at the Säälchen (Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg)

We’re kicking off our journey through the capital with a real bang: to mark the start of ‘explore Berlin’, we’re hosting two electrifying double concerts in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg on 3 and 4 September. Our venue is the Säälchen on the creative Holzmarkt25 site – a place that epitomises urban transformation, freedom and community like no other. It’s exactly the right space for our freeEroica programme. We’re dedicating ourselves to Ludwig van Beethoven’s Third Symphony, one of the greatest revolutionary acts in musical history. But we’re not simply performing Beethoven – we’re bringing him to life anew. With gripping re-compositions, jazz influences and radical improvisation, we break down the work – whilst remaining true to its cherished musical heritage – and translate the spirit of that era of upheaval directly into the present day. The orchestra moves freely through the Säälchen, sweeping the audience along with it and making the pursuit of the unexpected physically palpable.

Autumn sounds in the neighbourhood: freemahler at the Kulturstall | Gutshof Schloss Britz (Neukölln)

Our journey continues, into the historic south of the city. On 14 November at 7 pm and on 15 November at 4 pm, ‘explore Berlin’ will be performing at the ‘Kulturstall’ on the idyllic Schloss Britz estate. Against this historic backdrop, we present the visionary programme freemahler – what the earth tells us. Gustav Mahler created an immortal tribute to the beauty and unbridled power of nature in his symphonies. Today, in the face of climate change, this music takes on an urgent, almost painful relevance. Fifteen musicians bring Mahler’s melodies to the stage with improvisational ease, only to contrast them in the very next moment with soundscapes of transience and destruction. Through the recompositions of various works, a multi-layered reflection of our contemporary world at the cusp of time emerges. freemahler @ Kulturstall, Gutshof Schloss Britz is an intense, accessible experience that stirs the soul, provokes thought and uses music as a powerful tool for social change.

Music Mediation

Unleashing creativity: music education and community workshops

At Stegreif, music education is not a theoretical concept, but a living, tangible practice carried out on an equal footing. That is why each of our neighbourhood concerts is inextricably linked to a series of creative workshops in the respective district. Together with local project partners, we create safe spaces for musical experimentation right there in the community. Our programme is open to everyone: whether you’re an enthusiastic amateur, an up-and-coming musician or someone who’s never held an instrument before – every voice counts. At the heart of our outreach work lies musical improvisation. It serves as an accessible, powerful tool for enabling people to experience artistic self-efficacy and to surpass their own limits. Without rigid rules, participants discover their own creativity. Ideally, the results of these collaborative processes culminate in a workshop presentation, where the diversity of the neighbourhood bursts onto the stage.
