Once again this year, Stegreif has accepted the invitation from its long-standing partner and will be performing at the Konzerttheater Coesfeld on 22 November 2026. There, Stegreif will perform freebruckner – a re-composition of Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 in E major. This programme combines Bruckner’s symphonic music with improvisational freedom, bringing major themes such as loss, grief and hope into the present day.
Although known today primarily as a composer of great symphonies, Anton Bruckner was also famous during his lifetime for his skill at improvising on the organ. freebruckner brings together these two elements – symphonic music and improvisation – which were so characteristic of Bruckner. We present the 7th Symphony with improvisational freedom and the lightness of chamber music. The famous funeral music of the Adagio serves as a starting point for reflecting on the challenges and losses of our time. In doing so, 26 musicians expand the classical orchestral sound with saxophone, drum kit, electric guitar and their own singing. In the here and now, moving freely around the space, performing from memory and without a conductor, a performance emerges that breaks down the boundaries between performers and audience, between composition and improvisation.
At the Konzerttheater Coesfeld, ‘freebruckner’ becomes a moving total work of art that reinterprets Bruckner’s music, deeply moving the audience and instilling hope. We invite you to experience this moving symphony together!
