As part of the programme for the 'Kasseler Musiktage 2026', the Stegreif Orchestra will perform its re-composition of Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 in E major, entitled freebruckner. This programme combines Bruckner’s symphonic music with the freedom of improvisation, bringing major themes such as loss, grief and hope into the present day.
Although known today primarily as a composer of grand symphonies, Anton Bruckner was also famous during his lifetime for his art of improvisation on the organ. ‘freebruckner’ brings together these two elements – symphonic music and improvisation – which were so characteristic of Bruckner. We present the 7th Symphony with improvisational freedom and the lightness of chamber music. The famous Trauermusik of the Adagio serves as a starting point for reflecting on the challenges and losses of our time. In doing so, 26 musicians expand the classical orchestral sound with saxophone, drum kit, electric guitar and their own singing. In the here and now, moving freely around the space, performing from memory and without a conductor, a performance emerges that breaks down the boundaries between performers and audience, between composition and improvisation.
On this evening, ‘Freebruckner’ becomes a moving total work of art that reinterprets Bruckner’s music, deeply moving the audience and instilling hope. We invite you to experience this moving symphony together!
